Asking for Signs: God in the Mundane
An elixir for the New Moon in Libra Solar Eclipse. We are two things true at once.
Signs are a secret part of my spiritual practice. In seasons of uncertainty, I have sent out pleas to deliver me signs in the form of pink balloons, roses, and most recently fortune cookies. The act is so simple in the spirit of hope for feeling seen or witnessed by loved ones in the other world, yet so affirming when we receive them. Sometimes we receive them without ever even asking - but you will always know when you see one.
What could be translated as a coincidental mundane experience to a skeptic, is also a miraculous uplifting event - the difference between the two, is a feeling that shotguns you out of hopelessness and into presence.
This past week on a long drive home from the apple orchard, as my nine month old slept in her carseat I humbly sent out the thought to receive a sign in the form of a fortune cookie. We got home after a long day and found ourselves all getting back in the car to grab food from a restaurant that never, ever - not once - has given us fortune cookies. We initially sat down to eat, but after a few minutes decided it best to grab the food to go. I put my daughter down to sleep while my husband unpacked the food, and when I saw everything laid out - I gasped at none else, but two fortune cookies set on our dining room table.
“Fortune cookies!,” I exclaimed. My husband agreed, “I thought that was weird too, why would they give us those?” It was the sign I asked for.
I choose to believe, in reality, God is in the mundane. That the winds of the unseen world, are able to deliver the sign I asked for because there is no separation between our world and there’s. That this earthly world and our spirit as god - are perfectly indistinguishable. As light creates the illusion of the day, the contrast of the dark is an illusion of the night. The light is not extinguished - only temporarily out of view, perhaps to offer the experience of perception. Perhaps our consciousness too, is two things true at once. Filtered through the body of this mundane world, and also ever present in the next. At any moment we can bear witness to both.
If there is a need, ask for a sign and be patient for it. You need not tell anyone at all. Know that we assign the power of its meaning - that is the nature and language of symbols. Repeating numbers, feathers, rosary beads - all mundane tokens that are mechanisms to bypass our subconscious and connect us to our spirit. Feel freedom in choosing a specific and unique sign special to you, so that when you see it you will know.
